Generally, carbohydrates are considered the ideal energy source for athletes. Unfortunately, carbohydrates provide oral bacteria, an essential energy source for metabolism. Fermentable carbohydrates are metabolized by bacteria that are normally inhibited in the oral cavity to produce acids. These acids demineralize the tooth surface and cause dental decay. It is now well established that the total amount of carbohydrate does not determine the cariogenic potential of the diet but the form and frequency of consumption is the main factor that should be considered. |

Flanders and Bhat, 1995, conducted a pilot study of all injuries occurring in football and basketball in selected Illinois high schools. The data indicated that the rate of orofacial injuries during competition and practice in football was 1.4 injuries per 10.000 athletic exposures. |
Vigorous physical activities and competitive sports offer a variety of healthful benefits. However, participating in such activities also places you and your children at risk for injury, including trauma to the teeth and mouth that needs special care in diagnosis and management. Published research papers emphasizing orofacial trauma rates in different sports have yielded an enormous increase in injury rates and consequently an enormous increase in health care costs. |
